The short answer

  • Hootsuite is worth considering when a team needs a shared social publishing, inbox and reporting workflow and can support per-user pricing.
  • Hootsuite pricing lists ten social accounts on Standard and unlimited accounts on Professional and Advanced; buy a seat for each user.
  • Hootsuite's approval guide lists approval processes on Advanced and Enterprise. Test every role that can publish or change permissions.

Count seats and accounts separately

Hootsuite pricing lists Standard with up to ten social accounts and Professional and Advanced with unlimited social accounts. A Facebook Page and an Instagram profile are separate accounts. The page lists one or more user seats on each of those plans, sold per user; Enterprise pricing is custom.

In the rendered US view checked November 5, Hootsuite’s plan page showed Standard at $99, Professional at $199 and Advanced at $399 per user per month, billed annually, excluding applicable taxes. Enterprise is custom priced. The page also offers monthly billing; confirm the current currency, billing basis, seat count, taxes and final quote for your team.

Count writers, approvers, community managers and administrators who need their own access. Ask for the complete annual and monthly quote for that seat count, the necessary plan and any add-ons. More accounts and more people change the choice in different ways.

Map organization, team and account access

Hootsuite describes permissions at organization, team and social-account levels. Team membership helps organize work, but account permissions determine who can manage and publish to each account. Map the client, people and accounts before granting rights.

The account permissions table lists Editor, Advanced and Unlimited as able to publish and approve posts. Limited and Responder roles use approval as described in the approval setup guide. Test the actual writer, reviewer and administrator accounts, including inherited team rights.

Removing an account from a team leaves it in the organization; removing it from the organization removes associated past and scheduled content and analytics from Hootsuite. Export what the client needs and agree on ownership before a handoff.

Separate a request from an enforced gate

Hootsuite's setup guide lists Advanced and Enterprise for approval processes. It describes assigning roles per account and optional sequential or parallel approval tiers. In parallel, all designated approvers must approve; sequential stages proceed in order.

Hootsuite’s requested-review guide also names Business alongside Advanced and Enterprise. The setup guide and current plan page describe Advanced and Enterprise; ask Hootsuite about eligibility for an existing Business account.

Hootsuite’s permissions guide says approval workflows are unavailable for publishing to YouTube, and Limited members cannot access YouTube accounts. Map that channel separately before relying on an approval policy.

The same guide says a requested reviewer who is also in the custom flow is skipped the second time, without the skipped review appearing in approval history. A requested review precedes an existing configured process. Ask how your audit record will demonstrate the required sign-off.

Custom permissions distinguish publishing posts with approval from comments and replies with approval. The former does not require approval for comments and replies. Test the actual communication types your contract covers and who can change the permissions.

Hootsuite’s requested-review guide says that if a required approval is still pending at the scheduled time, the post fails to publish and moves to the Expired queue. Check that behavior in the experience and plan you intend to use.

Try a private dummy post as the restricted writer, a direct post as an Editor, and a permission change as an administrator. Repeat with an unavailable approver and inspect the scheduled time and approval history. Do not assume a client is the mandatory final approver merely because a review was requested.

How to compare the alternatives

Consider Buffer when a per-channel price and unlimited Team members fit your reviewer mix. Its Team plan lists approval workflows; check whether its Full Access rights fit the client's role.

Consider Planable when a configurable post-approval lock and required sign-off matter. Use the social publishing and approvals guide to compare the same permissions, costs and overdue approval case.
