The short answer

  • Choose Tally for free collection and webhooks when fair use and organization terms fit.
  • Consider Fillout for documented connected-record updates and a response-based allowance.
  • Test both with a new and returning synthetic lead, a failed destination and a client handoff.

Compare allowances and overflow

Tally lists free forms and submissions, with conditional logic and webhooks, subject to fair use. Sustained high volume can require a custom plan; paid subscriptions cannot be shared with businesses outside the registered organization. Price the actual client ownership structure.

Fillout lists unlimited forms and seats with 1,000 responses per month on Free. Starter is $15 monthly equivalent for 2,000 responses, billed $180 annually; Pro is $40 monthly equivalent for 5,000 responses, billed $480 annually. These are annual-billing list prices, not month-to-month charges.

Fillout’s response guide says forms continue collecting and the Results view does not change when a limit is exceeded. It also says repeated overages may lead to a request to upgrade and, if continued, temporary limits or suspension of some features. Continued collection is not an unconditional guarantee of access.

Create or update the intended record

Fillout’s HubSpot guide describes creating Contacts, Deals and Companies, updating existing contacts and prefilling from HubSpot. Test a new synthetic email and an existing contact with a changed field. Check matching, blank fields and the destination record rather than only the form confirmation.

Tally webhooks POST submission data to an endpoint. Tally’s Zapier guide describes triggering an action in another service from a submission. Design and test the receiver or automation’s create-versus-update behavior; a submission trigger alone does not guarantee deduplication.

For a concrete alternative, Tally’s Attio integration triggers an Attio workflow on submission; Attio actions can create or update records. The destination and workflow rules determine the outcome, so test the specific action and matching logic.

Check what a link exposes

Fillout’s update-form guide says update links load entire records by default. Restricting prefill to mapped question fields also removes unmapped fields from logic, calculations and answer piping. Inspect a synthetic record with an extra field, then repeat with restricted prefill and verify the branch.

Tally hidden fields can pass values through a form URL. Hidden is not access control: a recipient can inspect or alter a URL. Keep secrets and sensitive personal information out of links and use appropriate access controls.

Test failure and retries

Tally’s webhook guide describes a ten-second response deadline, staged retries and optional signatures. Cause a controlled failure and confirm the receiver verifies the signature and handles repeated events without unwanted duplicate records.

Fillout’s webhook guide describes an error on the Results page and a manual Retry integration action when available. It says resubmitting instead reruns connected integrations, workflows and notifications. Check who monitors errors and what side effects a retry or resubmission could cause.

Tally offers free form-level duplicate prevention using a chosen identifier, including a form field, hidden or calculated field, IP address or respondent ID. Only submissions made after the setting is enabled count; shared IP addresses can block different people. This does not replace the receiver’s create-or-update and repeated-event handling.

Move form, history and connections separately

Tally’s collaboration guide says template copies do not move responses and transferred forms lose integrations. Fillout’s form export guide says exports omit submissions and comments and integrations must be reconnected after import to another organization.

Export and inspect a response sample, name the archive owner and reconnect the destination in the client’s workspace. Send the new and returning synthetic lead again and confirm the client can access the form, archive and destination. Document the cutover and who will repair a failed connection.

Common questions

Which has more free responses?

Tally lists free submissions subject to fair use; Fillout Free lists 1,000 responses monthly.

Does Fillout stop collecting at its limit?

Fillout says collection and the Results view continue, but repeated overages can lead to requests to upgrade and possible feature restrictions.

Does a form export include its history and connections?

Fillout says its form export excludes submissions and comments. Tally says template copies omit responses and transferred forms lose integrations.
