The short answer

  • This guide is based on vendor documentation checked November 5, 2026. We have not tested the product or its integrations.
  • Contentsquare says new Hotjar accounts can no longer be created and directs new users to Contentsquare. Existing accounts should check their individual transition notice.
  • Contentsquare distinguishes tracked sessions from sampled replays. Verify the plan, collection rate and retention for your own project.

Separate sessions from replays

Contentsquare’s plan guide lists Free at up to 200,000 tracked sessions per month, with replays captured for 5% of sessions up to 10,000. A session allowance is not a promise that every session has a replay.

Contentsquare says Free and Growth stop collecting new sessions at the limit. Its table says calendar-month reset, but its explanatory text says annual subscriptions refresh based on the subscription start date. Confirm the reset and allocation for your contract.

Contentsquare’s replay guide says URL targeting can limit replay to matching pageviews and collection stops at the allocation. Its cookie documentation describes global sampling, URL rules, targeting, quota and consent states. Compare segments with aggregate data; a selected replay is not necessarily representative.

Contentsquare says blockers, private browsing or strict cookie settings can prevent capture, and replay processing times vary. Test the actual browser and consent configurations relevant to your audience.

Contentsquare’s pricing table lists one month of analytics access and one month of replay access on Free. It lists Growth analytics access for 13 months and replay access for two months. Verify your account and contract; access periods and collection allowances are different.

Contentsquare displays Growth Experience Analytics from $39 per month and presents a yearly billing option, but the interactive estimator also shows bundle discounts. Voice of Customer has separate paid Growth pricing and a Free tier. Confirm currency, sessions, responses, discounts and billed total at checkout.

See Contentsquare’s illustrated replay snapshot guide for vendor-hosted examples of its controls.

Verify masking and consent by channel

Contentsquare’s web documentation describes full, partial and no-masking modes, page rules and element rules. It says typed input and textarea values are masked, while selection state can remain visible. Verify the project’s actual configuration and review custom controls and page text.

Contentsquare says identity strings and user properties sent through specific APIs are not automatically redacted. URLs, referrers, errors and DOM content have different protections. Test each channel with synthetic values; decide whether and when collection should begin, and test denial and withdrawal. Masking does not automatically establish compliance.

Contentsquare says Shopify checkout does not support element-level masking rules and instructs users to mask checkout pages. Confirm platform and plan support before placing sensitive checkout flows in scope.

Plan the Hotjar transition

Contentsquare says new users sign up for Contentsquare rather than a new Hotjar account. For notified existing customers, Contentsquare’s account guide describes a 30-day exploration period and a move unless the owner opts out by the notice deadline. Do not assume every existing account has already moved.

Contentsquare’s migration FAQ says historical Hotjar analytics do not move, while surveys and feedback transfer when the subscription moves. The FAQ describes 12 months of read-only Hotjar access; the Hotjar service schedule states 90 days after the transition date. Confirm which term governs your account and export before the earliest applicable deadline.
