The short answer

  • Mixpanel is a candidate when product teams want event-based analysis and can define a stable identity before instrumenting.
  • Mixpanel pricing uses event-based billing by default, with a separate enterprise MTU option. Confirm the contract and add-ons.
  • Mixpanel’s web replay guide describes default masking, but a privacy review still needs to cover the whole implementation.

Count events and add-ons

Mixpanel pricing counts qualifying events across projects by ingestion month for most accounts. Some legacy accounts use event timestamps instead. Identify, merge and profile updates are among the documented exclusions. A backfill can affect the month it is ingested; confirm your account’s billing basis.

Mixpanel offers an enterprise monthly tracked user (MTU) option. Group Analytics and Data Pipelines are optional add-ons. Ask for a quote using peak events, groups and export needs.

Mixpanel’s pricing page calls the Free allowance “1M total events” in one section, but elsewhere describes a monthly threshold. This conflict remains unresolved; confirm the current limit and overage behavior before relying on Free.

Mixpanel’s current pricing documentation says Free continues collecting data after 1 million monthly events but pauses querying until a Growth upgrade. A July 2025 support reply says report access also resumes when a new month starts. Confirm the current reset rule before relying on uninterrupted reporting.

For a 1 million monthly-event Growth allowance, Mixpanel gives $0.00028 per additional event; the first million are free. Higher prepaid volumes change the rate. Confirm your actual plan, billing period and add-ons.

Choose identity rules before collecting

Mixpanel documents Simplified and Original identity APIs; the version cannot be changed after a project contains data. The Simplified API links device IDs to a user ID.

Mixpanel says two user IDs cannot be merged using the Simplified API. Choose a stable internal ID, reset identity on logout and test anonymous activity, shared devices and account changes. Do not assume a mistaken merge can be reversed.

Plan the exit before the retention clock

Mixpanel’s export guide says events are deleted two years after their event date, with an exception for qualifying older projects until a plan change. Confirm the policy for your project and contract.

Mixpanel provides a raw event export API in JSONL as well as report CSVs and optional pipelines. A report export is not a full event archive; reconcile timestamps, IDs and event counts in a destination you control.

Review web replay separately

Mixpanel’s web replay documentation says on-screen text and inputs are masked by default, with configuration to unmask selected content. It states a default 30-day replay retention, with longer custom retention as a paid add-on.

That description is specific to web replay. Review URLs, attributes, images, consent, access and the relevant mobile SDK separately. Use synthetic sensitive values to verify what reaches a test replay.

How to compare the alternatives

Compare the same events and identity cases with Amplitude and PostHog. The Mixpanel vs Amplitude comparison sets out the billing and privacy questions side by side.

Common questions

Does Mixpanel charge for users or events?

Mixpanel describes event-based pricing as the default and an enterprise MTU option. Check your contract.

Can two user IDs be merged?

Mixpanel says the Simplified API cannot merge two user IDs. Confirm the identity API used by your project.
