The short answer

  • Close is a strong candidate when the immediate requirement is a single CRM for calls, email, SMS and sales follow-up. Its communication design directly supports that brief.
  • Evaluate HubSpot in the context of the operation already using it. Its sequence documentation requires Professional or Enterprise in Sales or Service Hub and an eligible seat.
  • Do not compare Close’s automated Workflows with an entry-level HubSpot price that does not include the sequence process you intend to use.

Choose around the sales problem you actually have

Close is an attractive starting point for a team buying a sales workspace around conversations. Calls, email and SMS are a concrete product focus. That can be a good match when the task is helping a small group follow up consistently.

A team already using HubSpot should first document the records, automations, integrations and handoffs that depend on it. Replacing the sales CRM may create work elsewhere. We have not evaluated the full HubSpot suite here, so this comparison does not establish that either product should replace every other system.

Check the plan that supports timed follow-up

HubSpot sequences combine timed email templates and follow-up tasks. The documentation lists Sales Hub or Service Hub Professional and Enterprise and a seat requirement.

Close Workflow steps include email, SMS, call tasks and record changes. Close pricing includes automated Workflows on Growth and Scale, and excludes them from Essentials.

The practical comparison is between two eligible configurations. Obtain written confirmation of sender requirements, seats and the steps needed for your exact follow-up process. A lower advertised entry price does not answer that question.

Why Close belongs on this shortlist

Close’s communication page puts calling, email and SMS in the CRM. For a sales team explicitly seeking those channels together, that is a substantial reason to trial it.

Build a single realistic scenario: an inquiry arrives, a seller calls, sends a follow-up, assigns a next action and later hands the opportunity to a teammate. Inspect whether the new owner can understand the story without asking the original seller.

Score the same scenario in HubSpot using the intended subscriptions and integrations. This comparison does not infer that HubSpot lacks a channel because a particular source focuses on sequences. Verify each required capability directly.

Price the implementation as well as seats

Close Growth is $99 per user per month on annual billing, or $3,564 in annual seat cost for three users before variable charges. Request the same scope of quote from HubSpot: eligible seats, subscription term, any required onboarding, communication usage and the integrations the process depends on.

Add the effort to migrate records and reconnect downstream systems. A hypothetical reduction in tool count is not cash savings until the team can retire the old subscriptions. Record which costs actually disappear and when.

We do not quote a HubSpot total here because the relevant configuration must be established first. That is a limit of this comparison, not evidence that HubSpot is more expensive.

Use a trial that tests continuity

  1. Map the current dependencies. List where lead ownership, marketing context, service handoffs and reporting currently live. Identify the required destination of each field.
  2. Exercise the conversation. Call a synthetic contact, send the next message and inspect what another seller sees. Test reassignment during the process.
  3. Verify automation eligibility. Create the follow-up using the exact intended plans and seats. Check what stops, continues or needs manual action after a response.
  4. Check the exit. Export a representative sample and inspect the records and relationships the team needs to retain. Ask the vendor to confirm any gaps.

Compare the operating model after launch

Close’s role documentation distinguishes predefined roles from custom roles. Write down which actions a seller can take and which records they should see, then have both vendors demonstrate those requirements on the proposed plan.

Close’s Activity Overview lets a manager filter and inspect sales activity. Give each product the same management question and verify the report with the users who will rely on it. Activity totals alone should not decide the purchase.

Close’s offboarding guidance says removing a sender stops their workflows and disables their API keys. Inventory sender identities, integration ownership and number portability in both products so a future personnel change does not interrupt follow-up.

Our recommendation for a small sales team

Start with Close when the buying brief is a focused communication CRM and there are few dependencies on an existing platform. Its native channels make the reason for considering it easy to explain.

Keep HubSpot in the lead when preserving an established HubSpot operation is a major requirement, then test whether its eligible sequence configuration meets the sales team’s needs. Use the lightweight CRM guide if neither starting assumption fits.

Common questions

Are HubSpot sequences an entry-plan feature?

The sequence guide lists Professional or Enterprise in Sales Hub or Service Hub and requires an eligible seat. Confirm the precise configuration before comparing costs.

Should every HubSpot user move to Close?

No. Close is a strong workflow candidate for communication-led sales, but a move must account for the existing records, integrations and handoffs. We have not tested a full-platform replacement.
