The short answer
- Appcues is a candidate for teams prioritizing targeted experiences across supported web and mobile runtimes. Userpilot is also worth testing when usage analysis and in-app engagement need to sit together.
- Userpilot mobile is an annual add-on for Growth or Enterprise; Appcues also needs the right SDK and contract. Match your framework and desired experience types before comparing prices.
- Neither is a universal winner: compare identity, author permissions, data export and a representative live journey.
Compare the work, not the label
Appcues pricing makes MAUs, installations and published experiences relevant to the plan. Its subscription guidance counts live and scheduled experiences. Inventory the launch calendar as well as the traffic.
Userpilot Starter lists in-app engagement, tracking and usage trends; confirm the reports, retention, seats and modules required for your workflow. The listed plan price is not a complete comparable quote for another product’s usage units. At the check date the pricing page displayed Starter at $299 per month for up to 2,000 MAUs, and Growth from $849 per month; it did not state billing cadence in the text we could inspect. Confirm the commitment, taxes and terms before comparing.
Match the actual mobile stack
Appcues’ mobile installation guide describes SDKs for iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter and Ionic. Confirm your exact framework and experience types with the vendor.
Userpilot’s mobile guide requires an annually purchased add-on for Growth or Enterprise and an SDK; Starter users must upgrade. Custom mobile-content roles require Enterprise. Ask for current feature parity and the add-on price.
Userpilot screen capture guidance warns that changing naming and capture mode can affect targeting. Map names before a migration, then check the affected rules.
Run the same activation trial
Propose a synthetic user who signs up, changes account, returns on another device, qualifies for an onboarding prompt and completes a real product action. Compare identifiers, audience membership, prompt timing and the recorded action. This is a suggested trial, not a test we performed.
Appcues installation guidance says identified users in a rolling 30-day window count even without viewing content. Resetting at logout also clears the generated anonymous ID and can cause a flow to appear again. Include that transition in the trial.
Appcues segment guidance says segment rule changes affect connected experiences immediately. Name the person who can change production targeting and verify the effect before launch.
Userpilot’s mobile ordering guidance separates push frequency controls from in-app throttling. Test competing messages and inspect both settings if a qualifying prompt is suppressed.
Appcues’ team guide distinguishes Editors, who can create and edit, from Publishers, who can publish and archive experiences. Userpilot lists built-in roles and reserves custom roles for Enterprise. Verify who can change production content on the proposed plan.
Price the complete rollout
Specify MAUs, anonymous traffic, installations, scheduled and live experiences, staff access and mobile runtime for each quote. Ask for each vendor’s counting method and the consequence of an overage.
Userpilot’s glossary defines its billable MAUs as unique users identified in a calendar month. Appcues describes a rolling 30-day count for identified users, and its subscription guidance also counts anonymous identifiers. Reconcile both periods and pre-login traffic in the quote.
Appcues subscription guidance says content keeps running above the MAU limit and an applicable prorated upgrade fee is charged. Confirm that this applies to the proposed contract and get the notification and pricing in writing. Ask Userpilot for its own delivery and overage terms.
Inspect data access before committing
Userpilot’s bulk export API supports raw event, user and company data as JSON or CSV on Enterprise or as a Growth add-on. Verify the fields and history you need; that export does not establish portability of a guide.
Preserve content, targeting, event definitions and ownership for either product. Ask for a sample export and reproduce a representative experience before removing the original.
Common questions
Is Userpilot web-only?
No. Userpilot documents native mobile content with an annual add-on on Growth or Enterprise.
What counts toward Appcues published experiences?
Appcues says live and scheduled experiences both count.
Which should we choose?
Test the same journey on your runtime and compare complete quotes, author permissions and data access; either may fit depending on those results.
