The short answer
- Crisp is worth evaluating for a team that wants a workspace-based support inbox and can fit its operators, customer profiles and channels into a suitable plan.
- A workspace allowance is not unlimited AI usage. Hugo consumes token-based credits and may stop when the allowance is exhausted unless pay-as-you-go is enabled.
- Test the automated inbox and escalation path with synthetic conversations, including when no operator is available.
Count operators and customer profiles
Crisp pricing lists Free, Mini, Essentials and Plus at $0, $45, $95 and $295 per workspace per month. They include two, four, ten and twenty-plus operator seats, respectively; Plus lists extra agents at $10 per month. The stated customer-profile caps are 100, 5,000, 50,000 and 200,000: those are profile limits, not monthly conversation allowances.
Mini adds a shared email inbox; Essentials adds the knowledge base and broader channel and automation features. Check the exact channel, provider charges and whether a second brand needs another workspace. Unlimited inbox conversations do not imply unlimited profiles or AI usage.
Budget Hugo by usage, not resolutions
Hugo billing lists $5, $25 and $75 of monthly included credits on Mini, Essentials and Plus. Credits are token-based: context and response size affect consumption, and tests can consume credits. A credit is not a resolved conversation.
With pay-as-you-go disabled, Crisp says Hugo stops answering after credits are consumed and new conversations escalate to operators. Pay-as-you-go is optional and supports limits. Set an owner for budget alerts and verify the route when the limit is reached.
Keep training data and access intentional
Crisp’s training guide says website content is refreshed manually after changes. Assign responsibility for refresh and inspect restricted sources before enabling them. Confirm how knowledge-base changes sync and whether source permissions apply to the customer-facing agent; do not assume that an integration preserves every access boundary.
Check the automated inbox before relying on a person
Crisp describes a separate automated inbox for AI-handled conversations. Review escalation rules and notification behavior: a conversation assigned to automation may not notify a human by default. Test an explicit request for an agent, a stale answer and a request outside business hours, then verify the receiving inbox and context.
Plan an exit and a safe trial
Inventory each mailbox, chat widget, customer profile, attachment, routing rule and AI source. Ask which exports or APIs preserve them, their plan gates and retention limits. Test with synthetic information and no live channel connection; a transcript export is not a portable chatbot configuration.
Choose the billing unit that fits
Help Scout lists per-user paid plans and metered AI resolutions; Intercom lists seats and Fin outcomes. Compare actual users, channels, source management and fallback behavior before comparing a headline price.
