The short answer

  • Count the people who need access alongside the sites and recurring document work; a seat price alone cannot describe the workload.
  • If unlimited users matter, start with Clearscope’s documented plans and compare the work allowances with your production calendar.
  • Treat a content score as a vendor’s measure, then give an editor responsibility for factual review and the decision to publish.
  • Test both a new draft and an update to an existing page. Save the content body separately from any inventory export.

Price the team’s actual workload

Start with the work your team completes in a billing period, then map the people and sites involved. A plan that accommodates writers can still constrain the number of drafts or pages they work on.

We compared documentation from Clearscope, Frase and Surfer. Clearscope Essentials lists $129 monthly for 50 tracked queries and 50 pages, plus 20 monthly discoveries/drafts. Every Clearscope plan lists unlimited users and projects. Content sharing and exporting are also included.

Frase Starter lists $49 month-to-month or $39 monthly equivalent billed yearly. It includes one seat and one site. Frase includes ten articles and 50 audit pages monthly on Starter. Professional lists $129 month-to-month with three seats and five sites; extra seats are $29 monthly.

Surfer Standard lists $99 per month on annual billing, with 25 prompts refreshed weekly and 360 documents. The document allowance period needs confirmation before you calculate a cost per document.

For example, a five-person team with five sites exceeds Frase Starter’s single seat and site. Frase Professional lists three seats and five sites at $129 month-to-month, and each extra seat is $29 monthly. That example uses month-to-month Professional pricing and excludes other charges.

Give each vendor your expected monthly production and the number of people who need access. Record whether an allowance refreshes or accumulates, and what happens if a busy month exceeds it. Those answers make the quote useful for a publishing calendar.

Frase terms distinguish monthly payment from the subscription term. The default term is a year or the order-form term, with 30-day nonrenewal notice. Read the signed order alongside the payment schedule.

Give an editor the last word

Use a score to identify questions for review, then judge the draft against the brief. A vendor’s content score is its own measure; a high score does not prove a page will rank.

Surfer’s ranking study describes an observational correlation analysis and says correlation is not causation. It cannot show that raising a score caused a ranking gain.

Set a separate acceptance standard before a writer starts. An editor should verify claims against the supplied sources, judge whether the article answers the reader, and decide whether suggested changes make the text clearer. Record rejected suggestions as well as accepted ones.

The practical question is whether the tool helps the team finish a useful page. Compare editing time and the changes a reviewer requests on the same brief. A higher score alone cannot tell you how much review remains or who will do it.

Test the route to the live page

Choose the publishing route by who can review the final version and what happens to an existing page. A convenient connection still needs an owner for the last approval.

Clearscope’s Google Docs instructions require a desktop browser, permission to install the add-on and document editing rights. It also requires a shared Clearscope draft link. The link is accessible to people who have it. A Workspace administrator’s settings and your sharing policy therefore matter to the writer handoff.

Give an external writer an appropriate test document and follow the handoff through editor review. Verify who can open the shared link and whether the editor can see the draft in the intended place. Decide who removes access when the assignment ends.

Surfer’s WordPress instructions say a new export creates a draft. An update to an already published post retains published status and makes changes visible immediately. Assign the update to someone authorized to change the live page, and use a safe fixture to test the route.

Frase’s Webflow guide requires an existing CMS collection and an API token with CMS/Sites read-write permissions. It also calls for mapping CMS fields. Without a public URL template, Frase can publish but cannot track performance, apply Content Guard or republish updates.

Map each field your page needs before allowing a connection to publish. A successful title and body transfer may leave another required field empty or mapped incorrectly. Review the destination page and its status. Inspect its URL after the handoff; agree on how to reverse an unwanted update.

Keep the work when you move

Preserve the content body and the context needed to use it before closing an account. An inventory helps you find drafts, but it is only one part of a usable archive.

Clearscope’s draft-list export covers up to the first 5,000 drafts and includes query and locale. It also includes user, tags, editor URL and grading/readability metadata. The documented CSV is a metadata inventory. It does not demonstrate a complete export of article bodies.

Open the CSV and match a sample against the original drafts. Save the bodies separately, then check whether the destination can accept them with the formatting your team needs. Keep a record of the original URL and the person responsible for each live page.

Frase’s legacy migration guide says eligible base subscription prices can carry over, while credit reset timing and governance can change. Frase also describes rebuilding folders and integrations. Compare the actual migrated allowance with your workload instead of assuming the old price buys the same work.

Frase’s migration guidance conflicts on archived documents: its FAQ says they migrate, while preparation guidance says only live documents migrate. Export backups and resolve the treatment of archived work before moving. Verify a representative document in the destination before relying on the move.

Run a handoff trial

Use the same brief and acceptance criteria for each product. Include an existing article refresh, because a new draft alone cannot reveal the risks of updating a live page.

Keep the results with the quote and assign an owner to each unresolved handoff. The software trial guide helps turn those observations into a decision the team can repeat.

Common questions

What is the best content optimization software for a team of writers?

If unlimited users are the priority, investigate Clearscope. Compare its work allowances with your calendar. If site and seat limits match your team, consider Frase’s plan and publishing workflow.

Does a higher content score improve rankings?

A score is the vendor’s measure. Surfer’s observational study says correlation is not causation, so the score alone cannot prove a ranking outcome.

Can I send a Clearscope draft to a writer in Google Docs?

Clearscope’s instructions require add-on access and editing rights. A shared draft link is also required. People with that link can access the draft, so review the sharing policy.

Does Surfer publish WordPress changes immediately?

Surfer’s WordPress guide says new exports create drafts, while updates to published posts retain published status and become visible immediately.

Can I export my Clearscope articles before leaving?

Clearscope’s draft-list CSV is a metadata inventory for up to the first 5,000 drafts. Save and verify content bodies separately.
