## The short answer

- For two separate team inboxes and a workflow builder in Intercom, evaluate Advanced; Help Scout Standard lists two inboxes and basic workflows. Compare the exact workflow and channel terms, not just names.
- Both price AI support on a vendor-defined outcome or resolution, but the rules and prices differ. Neither count is a direct measure of customer satisfaction.
- Use the same synthetic cases to inspect source freshness, a human request and what the receiving teammate sees.

## Start with the same workload

Assume five full support agents, two support inboxes, one knowledge base and 1,000 customer conversations per month. This is an illustrative workload, not a measured deployment. Let N be the number of billable AI outcomes under each vendor’s own definition; it need not be the same N or equal the number of conversations or contacts.

[Intercom](https://www.intercom.com/learning-center/intercom-pricing) lists Advanced at $85 per full seat per month billed annually, or $425 per month equivalent for five seats and $5,100 per year. [Help Scout Standard](https://www.helpscout.com/pricing/) is $25 per user per month billed annually, or $125 per month equivalent for five users and $1,500 per year; its plan lists two inboxes. Month-to-month rates are $99 and $30 per user respectively, or $495 and $150 per month for five. These USD list figures exclude AI, tax and other charges. The plans are not feature-equivalent quotes.

## Add AI only after defining the bill

For support, Intercom lists Fin from $0.99 per outcome; Help Scout lists Scout pay-as-you-go at $0.75 per resolution per month after an eligible trial. Illustrative AI costs are $0.99 × Intercom billable outcomes and $0.75 × Help Scout billable resolutions, respectively. Contract commitments, channel charges, taxes, other AI tools and prepaid discounts are excluded.

[Intercom’s outcome FAQ](https://www.intercom.com/help/en/articles/8205718-fin-ai-agent-outcomes) can count an answer followed by customer inactivity as a resolution. Its general statement that asking for a person is not charged conflicts with its stated information-collection inactivity exception. A teammate self-assigning without Fin escalation can also be charged. [Help Scout’s guide](https://docs.helpscout.com/article/1746-ai-resolutions-pricing) says a session with an answer and no request for further help is billable once, while no full answer or a request for more help is not. Confirm reopening and channel-specific cases in each quote. The reviewed Help Scout billing document does not establish a reopening or credit window; confirm both vendors’ terms.

## Match the work your team does

[Intercom’s plan guide](https://www.intercom.com/learning-center/intercom-pricing) lists shared inbox and basic automation on Essential, with multiple team inboxes, round robin and a workflow builder on Advanced. [Help Scout](https://www.helpscout.com/pricing/) lists two inboxes, basic workflows and live chat on Standard; Plus adds advanced workflows and round robin. Map an actual assignment, internal note, customer reply and escalation to the right plan rather than treating a checkmark as identical behavior.

If only one shared inbox is required, Intercom Essential is a different starting point from the two-inbox scenario. If an existing helpdesk should stay, evaluate Fin separately and confirm its minimum commitment.

## Inspect the knowledge and human handoff

[Intercom](https://www.intercom.com/help/en/articles/7837514-add-your-content-for-fin-ai-agent) requires enabled, published content and matching audiences; [website sync](https://www.intercom.com/help/en/articles/9357945-sync-and-manage-websites) usually happens weekly and can be run manually. [Help Scout](https://docs.helpscout.com/article/1771-scout-best-practices) says sources other than Docs require manual resync when content changes. Neither statement establishes identical propagation of permissions from every external source.

Use a synthetic fixture with an outdated answer, a restricted document and a direct request for a person. Specify what should happen before running it; check the answer, source, receiving inbox, context, notification and billable record. Test unavailable operators and failed syncs. These are proposed tests, not results.

## Decide who can change the answer

Assign owners for source publication, audience changes, AI instructions, escalation and review of mistakes. Check available permissions and reporting in the quoted plan. Keep read-only answers separate from actions such as refunds or account changes, and require an explicit authorization policy for any connected action.

## Know when to keep the existing tool

Inventory customer identifiers, conversations, attachments, saved replies, routing, AI instructions, reports and channel connections. Confirm export and import fidelity before cutover; Intercom documents [cloud conversation exports with optional attachments](https://www.intercom.com/help/en/articles/7029721-export-conversations-data-to-cloud-storage), but an export is not a portable AI configuration. If the current inbox meets the acceptance tests and the new tool does not remove enough work to justify switching, retain it.

## Read the product notes

The [Intercom profile](https://quillwell.com/guides/software/intercom/) covers Fin’s outcome exceptions and source audiences; [Help Scout](https://quillwell.com/guides/software/help-scout/) distinguishes current and legacy billing. [Crisp](https://quillwell.com/guides/software/crisp/) offers a workspace-based package with a different AI credit model.

## Common questions

### Are AI resolutions the same as successful customer outcomes?

No. Both are vendor-defined billing events. Review actual conversations and customer feedback separately.

### Does Help Scout bill every account by contacts?

No. [Current pricing](https://www.helpscout.com/pricing/) lists user-based paid plans, while [contact-based plans](https://docs.helpscout.com/article/1593-contact-based-billing-and-plans-guide) exist for some accounts.

This is a documentation-only assessment: we have not tested the products, integrations, AI answers or support. Prices and plan terms can change.

The five-agent workload and N outcomes are illustrative. List prices are not negotiated quotes; the compared plans have different features and billing terms.

Sponsorship does not buy an editorial ranking or a positive review. [How we research](https://quillwell.com/guides/editorial/).
