# Ahrefs vs Semrush: compare the research, monitoring and seats you need

- Start with the specific domains, research reports, tracked targets and people who will use the account. Neither a plan name nor a starting price establishes which product is cheaper for your work.

## A common workload, not a winner by list price

Imagine three owned sites, two operators and 500 keyword–location–device combinations. Add competitor research and exports according to actual work, and decide whether both people need editing access. This is a planning fixture, not a test or an assertion that both vendors count every configuration identically. Confirm verification, locations, devices and keyword accounting before selecting a tier.

[Ahrefs Lite](https://ahrefs.com/pricing) lists one user, up to two extra users at $40 each, five unverified projects and unlimited verified projects. It displays $129 per month; one extra user at that listed rate would imply $169 per month before tax and other charges. However, [Ahrefs’ billing guide](https://help.ahrefs.com/en/articles/9734884-what-is-the-difference-between-credit-based-plans-and-unlimited-credit-plans) describes usage-based billing for extra users on credit-based plans, so confirm the applicable seat rate before relying on that arithmetic. Lite includes 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits and 1,000 research credits per user.

[Semrush’s current SEO plan](https://www.semrush.com/kb/1011-subscriptions) lists five monitored websites and 500 tracked keywords daily; the [price page](https://www.semrush.com/pricing/seo-ai-search/) displays $139 monthly and additional users starting at $45 monthly. Its [user guide](https://www.semrush.com/kb/1409-user-management) lists Semrush One Starter at $45 and Pro+ at $80 for each additional user; AI Visibility Toolkit access is separate for additional users. Confirm which package, permissions and billing apply before calculating the full team cost.

## Compare output and coverage on the same fixture

Both vendors offer keyword and competitor research and site auditing, but matching labels do not establish equal coverage, freshness or accuracy. Give each the same known domain, competitors, markets and queries; inspect the actual rows, missing pages, history and export allowances. A report can be useful for discovery even if an individual estimate differs from owned analytics.

[Ahrefs](https://help.ahrefs.com/en/articles/6061658-what-actions-consume-credits) consumes research credits for many report requests, with separate limits for Rank Tracker and Site Audit. Its [current Standard plans and above](https://help.ahrefs.com/en/articles/6117209-what-s-the-difference-between-all-ahrefs-subscription-plans) describe unlimited fair research usage, not unlimited exports or monitoring. Semrush uses plan and tool limits; ask for the specific reports, rows and exports needed rather than equating a report allowance to an Ahrefs credit.

## Interpret traffic and authority independently

[Ahrefs](https://help.ahrefs.com/en/articles/1115995-is-organic-traffic-a-monthly-figure-based-on-past-30-days) estimates monthly organic traffic from keyword volume and ranking-position click-through rates. [Semrush](https://www.semrush.com/kb/858-traffic-numbers-in-semrush) describes Domain Analytics estimates based on positions, volume and average click-through rates, and a different method for Traffic Analytics. These are models with different coverage and refresh timing, not audited competitor visits.

[Ahrefs Domain Rating](https://help.ahrefs.com/en/articles/1409408-what-is-domain-rating-dr) is backlink-based; [Semrush Authority Score](https://www.semrush.com/kb/747-authority-score-backlink-scores) is a compound proprietary metric. Their scales are not calibrated to one another and neither is a Google-issued ranking signal. Validate an individual link or technical issue in context rather than choosing on the headline score.

## Check targets, history and crawl capacity

Semrush’s [multi-target guidance](https://www.semrush.com/kb/692-multi-targeting), written using older toolkit tier names, says each keyword assigned to an additional target counts again; its current [plan guide](https://www.semrush.com/kb/1011-subscriptions) places multi-location/device tracking on Pro+. Ask how the three-site fixture is configured on the current offer. [Ahrefs counts](https://help.ahrefs.com/en/articles/1446270-how-are-tracked-keywords-calculated) each keyword for each location and project, and says the default refresh is weekly. Confirm device settings, cadence and the actual count in the quote.

Record the volume of pages you need crawled and how often, not just number of projects. Compare history depth and the date observations begin. A list export lets you carry inputs between tools, but it does not by itself carry over a complete historical time series. [Ahrefs pricing](https://ahrefs.com/pricing) lists historical data of six months on Lite, two years on Standard and five years on Advanced; verify the reports and exports covered.

## Make AI visibility a separate decision

[Ahrefs](https://help.ahrefs.com/en/articles/13192745-how-to-set-up-custom-prompts-to-track-brand-visibility-in-ai-assistants) includes 150 monthly custom prompt checks on Lite; one execution for one model and location is one check. Its [Brand Radar index](https://ahrefs.com/brand-radar) is separately offered. Set the same prompt list, engines, locations and refresh schedule before comparing a separate AI quote. A prompt allowance is not interchangeable with an execution allowance, and sampled AI mentions do not show the total market or revenue.

## Make the decision with a small trial

On an authorized site, investigate a known technical issue, research a competitor and export a keyword set. Note the depth and dates of results, limits consumed and whether both operators can do their work. Ask for a written quote with term, taxes, seats, add-ons and overages. Keeping an existing core tool and adding a focused AI or content product can be a sensible option if switching would discard valuable history.
